Proof of Canadian Status for Applying as a Domestic Student

The practice of confirming citizenship is the standard best practice amongst Canadian post-secondary institutions. The following documents will be accepted as proof of Canadian Status. Expired documents will be rejected.

 

  • Canadian Passport

    • Passports must include a signed signature page in order to be valid for ID purposes.

  • Secure Certificate of Indian Status Card (SCIS)

  • Certificate of Indian Status Card

  • Canadian Birth Certificate* **

  • Canadian Citizenship Certificate* **

  • Canadian Permanent Resident Card

  • Confirmation of Permanent Residence document*

* Must be presented with a valid Canadian government-issued photo ID.

** Commemorative versions of the BC Birth Certificate and the commemorative form of Canadian Citizenship certificates are not accepted.

Canadian Citizenship Situation

If you were born in Canada, you must provide an original of either:

  • a Canadian birth certificate (issued in Canada by the province or territory of your birth), or

  • a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship

If you were born outside of Canada, you must provide one of the four Canadian citizenship documents below:

  • Certificate of Canadian citizenship

  • Certificate of Naturalization in Canada

  • Certificate of Retention of Canadian citizenship

  • Certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad

Please note that notarized copies are not accepted. Your proof of Canadian citizenship document will be returned to you along with the new passport on the collection date. Additional information may be requested to confirm citizenship.
